Its monoplane design with slightly upturned wings is clean and streamlined in appearance. A tight cowling, sleek canopy, very clean exterior metalwork, and light weight help explain its speed.

Instead of a finished plane, the buyers purchased the plans to assemble their aircraft. With the T-18, Thorp tried to devise a homebuilt that would be more accessible for aspiring pilots.

1 天前 · I was fortunate enough to have his T18 in our hanger and used his as a pattern, I fly as his wing man on most trips. Nothing like 180 plus ponies and a costly speed prop. The real secret keep it light and sleek.

1 天前 · The T-18 is a 1500 lb gross weight aircraft with an 86 square foot wing that has a laminar airfoil, if I recall correctly. The Newsletter archive covers the installation of stall strips to let you know that you have slowed and the wing is within 5 MPH of stall. This is in the form of a stick shaker which you shouldn't miss.
