Taebaeksan, also known as Mount Taebaeksan or Mount Taebaek, is a South Korean mountain with several important peaks of the Taebaek mountain range (in Western-style geography), or the Taebaek Jeongmaek Range (in Korean-style geography).

Taebaeksan National Park, known as 태백산국립공원 in Korean, is a stunning national treasure located in South Korea’s Gangwon and Gyeongsangbuk-do provinces. Established as a national park in 2016, it spans approximately 70.8 square kilometers (27.3 square miles).

Taebaeksan Mountain range encompasses several peaks such as Yeongbong Peak (alt. 1,560 m), where in the past, people would conduct rites to venerate Heaven at Cheonjedan Altar; Janggunbong Peak (alt. 1,567 m), Munsubong Peak (alt. 1,517 m), and its summit of Hambaeksan Mountain (alt. 1,572 m).

Taebaeksan Mountain consists of Janggunbong Peak to the north (1,567 m), Munsubong Peak to the east (1,517 m), and Busoebong Peak (1,546 m) between Yeongbong Peak and Munsubong Peak, centered on Yeongbong Peak with Cheonjedan Altar. Anyone can easily climb Taebaeksan Mountain as it has a small number of rock walls as well as a gentle slope.

Taebaek-san (Big White Mountain) is, for shamanists, one of the most sacred mountains in Korea. Five year-round hiking trails snake up through the park to the summit, Janggun-bong (1568m) and Cheonjedan (천제단), an altar connected with Korea’s mythical founder, Dangun.
