A takadai (高台), also called kōdai, is a frame used for making kumihimo, a type of Japanese braid. The braids created on the takadai are flat (3D effects can be achieved) as opposed to the braids created on the marudai [1] which have a round or polygonal section.

In this class we will learn the two foundation techniques from which almost all other ayatakedai braid s stem: Surugagumi and Kamakuragumi. We will also explore the function of twist in the threads, and how it can dramatically alter the appearance ofthe braid.

Where our takadai are designed to allow the braiders to sit in a chair to braid, the traditional Japanese takadai is a larger piece of equipment. The braider kneels on a board or sits on a stool inside the stand.

As the demand for kumihimo for Japanese swords increased, frames called takadai and naikidai were invented to make kumihimo, and the technique of braiding developed dramatically, giving rise to many new techniques.

The takadai is a Japanese braiding loom designed for making flat braids. Takadais can produce a wider variety of braid widths than can be made on the marudai, from narrow sashes or garment trims to scarves. Since the hand movements are linear, the tama/bobbin movements are often easier to memorize than those of marudai braids.

The takadai is essentially a braiding loom. Think weaving turned on an oblique angle. So much fun to make and they have many contemporary uses! 2022年1月22日 · Takadai is a specialized loom meant for making kumihimo braids. Threads or yarns are placed around these tools to make desired patterns. If you need to weave beads, you will also need a beading needle. The organized threads on the tools are kept taut by using specialized weighted bobbins called Tama.
