National Pipe Thread Taper ( NPT ) is a U.S. standard for tapered threads used on threaded pipes and fittings . In contrast to straight threads that are found on a bolt, a taper thread will pull tight and therefore make a fluid-tight seal.

NPT stands for National Pipe Tapered threads. The basic profile is a 60° truncated triangle similar to the Unified Inch threads (UNC/UNF). The main difference is that the thread profile is tapered at an angle of 1°47′ (0.75 in/ft or 62.5 mm/m) relative to the axis.

NPT taps produce threads that do require sealant when joined to an external NPT threaded part. Pipe joint compounds (also known as pipe sealant) seal tightly threaded pipe fittings and prevent any leak path along the thread.

Cut and repair threads and drill holes in many different sizes. Tap and die wrenches are included. The dies are hex shaped for use with conventional wrenches. The taps are made of carbon steel and are recommended for thread repair and occasional tapping.
