The Consolidated TBY Sea Wolf was a United States Navy torpedo bomber of World War II. It was designed by Vought but entered service and was manufactured by Consolidated Aircraft due to high demand for production lines.

The landing gear was retracted into the wing backward in flight with a turn of 90 °.

The Vought SB2U Vindicator is an American carrier-based dive bomber developed for the United States Navy in the 1930s, the first monoplane in this role. Vindicators still remained in service at the time of the Battle of Midway, but by 1943, all had been withdrawn to training units. It was known as the Chesapeake in Royal Navy service.

However, Vought's current commitment lay in manufacture of the classic F4U "Corsair" carrier-based fighter by the thousands which left little room for a new torpedo bomber in the production mix.

The original design was not by Consolidated Aircraft, but rather by Vought, who designed the then XTBU-1 Sea Wolf to a 1939 U.S. Navy requirement. The first prototype flew two weeks after Pearl Harbor.

Competing against the Grumman Corp. to provide a replacement for the Douglas TBD Devastator torpedo plane for the U.S. Navy, the Vought Sea Wolf was proved to be considerably superior to the TBF Avenger. Like the Avenger, it had a long internal torpedo bay and a revolving dorsal turret for a rear-facing gunner.
