When these important life functions are compromised by end-stage TMD intra-articular pathology that leads to anatomical distortion of the TMJ itself then the TMJ total joint replacement (TMJR) can be utilized to salvage the joint by an appropriately trained surgical team and restore mandibular function and form.

The aim of the present study was to determine which prosthesis has resulted in the best outcomes after total temporomandibular joint replacement (TMJR). A comprehensive electronic search was undertaken in September 2015.
