The Type IX U-boat was designed by Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine in 1935 and 1936 as a large ocean-going submarine for sustained operations far from the home support facilities. Type IX boats were briefly used for patrols off the eastern United States in an attempt to disrupt the stream of troops and supplies bound for Europe.

2016年4月29日 · The result was the Type IX. First entering service in 1937, the Type IXA soon gave way to the longer range Type IXB, though Germany commissioned just 22 of both types. Types IXC and IXC/40, with significantly increased fuel capacity for even greater range, brought the series to its zenith, with 141 entering service.

Designed in 1935-1936 as large ocean-going U-boats, they were derived from type IA. Diving depth designed as 100m operational and 200m crush depth (many boats went much deeper and survived). Fitted with 6 torpedo tubes below the waterline (4 at the bow and 2 at the stern) they carried 22 torpedoes.

These boats were a variation of the IXD which in turn were derived from the IXC only with lengthened pressure hull and enlarged outer casing. The IXD/42 was almost identical to the IXD but with more engine power (5400 ehp against 4400 of the IXD).

Type IXD2 includes 28 ships, the majority of the entire Type IXD. These offer ever-increasing range to an impressive 36,290 miles. The Type IXD2 can operate as far as Japan and the Indian Ocean, making it one of the deadliest submarine systems to date. The number of torpedoes has been increased to 24 (or 72 mines).
