U 531 zum Auftauchen gezwungen, konnte aber entkommen. Später ortete der britische Zerstörer "Vidette" das U-Boot und griff es mit Hedgehog-Wasser-bomben an. Es gab zwei deutliche Explosionen und Lichtblitze unter Wasser, dann kam eine große Luftblase an die Oberfläche. Position 52.48N 45.18W.

U 531, unter Kapitänleutnant Herbert Neckel, lief am 13.04.1943 von Kiel aus. Nach dem Marsch über die Ostsee, Brennstoffergänzung in Kristiansand und der Beseitigung von Undichtigkeiten in Bergen, operierte das Boot im Nordatlantik, südlich Island und nordöstlich von Neufundland.
