U-GAS® gasification technology, a single stage fluidized bed gasifier developed by the Gas Technology Institute (GTI), was designed to process all ranks of coal and provide a synthesis gas (syngas) of low-to-medium heating value.

In 2019, SunGas Renewables Inc. was established as a subsidiary of GTI International to take U-GAS technology to market for biomass and other waste feedstocks.

Two versions of the process were developed more or less in parallel, with the U-GAS® technology developed for gasification of all ranks of coal and the RENUGAS® technology for gasification of highly reactive fuels such as peat, biomass, pulp mill residues and wastes.

The Technology U-GAS is an advanced, single-stage, fluidized-bed gasification process. It operates at high efficiency with low emissions to produce low- to medium-Btu gas from various feedstocks, including all ranks of coal. This gas can be used to produce power, chemicals or fuel.

The U-GAS process is considered to be one of the more flexible, efficient, and economical coal gasification technologies developed in the US during the last decade. The U-GAS technology is presently available for licensing from GDC, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of IGT.

The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) has developed the U-GAS process to produce a low- or medium-Btu gas (U-GAS) from different types of coal feed stocks. The process uses a combination of fluidized-bed gasification and ash agglomeration in a single-stage reactor.

The U-GAS® process has been developed by the Institute of Gas Technology to produce a low-to medium-Btu (150 to 300 Btu/SCF) fuel gas from coal in an environmentally acceptable manner. the process accomplishes decaking, devolatilization, and gasification of coal in addition to separation of ash in a single-stage fluidized-bed reactor.
