The Underwater Demolition Badge was established as a decoration for members of Navy Underwater Demolition Teams (UDTs) and is considered a predecessor decoration to the modern day Special Warfare Badge. [1] The Underwater Demolition Badge was originally worn as a patch on the upper sleeve of a Navy uniform.

The Underwater Demolition Team (UDT), or frogmen, were amphibious units created by the United States Navy during World War II with specialized missions. They were predecessors of the Navy's current SEAL teams.

The WARFLOT is most commonly referred to as the Underwater Demolition Team or UDT, and sometimes as UDT/SEALs, coming from the fact UDTs are the most prominent branch of the flotilla and their close ties with US Navy SEALs respectively.

In 1981, the UDT no longer referred to their team as UDT but as a SEAL Team, i.e., UDT 21 became SEAL Team 4. All the UDT and SEAL members wore the Navy Trident and were designated Naval Special Warfare operators.
