NGC 6572 is a planetary nebula in the constellation Ophiuchus. It was discovered in 1825 by the German astronomer Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve. According to several sources such as Sky & Telescope, this object received the nicknames Blue Racquetball, Emerald Nebula, Green Nebula, and Turquoise Orb.

Planetary nebulae are created during the late stages of the evolution of certain stars that eject gas into space and emit intense ultraviolet radiation that makes the material glow.

100 years ago this object was described as one of the most curious objects in the heavens, a star surrounded by a bright green ellipse of fuzzy light. This was before much was really known about planetary nebula, but even today this object is a wonder. This object is two magnitudes brighter than M57 (the Ring Nebula) but 5 times smaller.

2021年7月19日 · Our object for the 150th monthly edition of the Observer’s Challenge is the tiny, but bright, planetary nebula NGC 6572, variously nicknamed the Emerald Nebula, the Blue Racquetball, and the Turquoise Orb. NGC 6572 is a relatively young planetary nebula, which only began to expand from its central star, HD 166802, a few millennia ago. In comparison to other similar nebulae, then, it is still relatively small, with a diameter of about a fifth of a light year.
