Contracts for Difference (CfD) are the main market support mechanism for low carbon electricity generation in the UK. The scheme replaced the Renewables Obligation which closed to new generation in March 2017. It is administered by the Low Carbon Contracts Company (LCCC), which is owned by the UK Government.

The Contracts for Difference scheme (CfD) was established in 2014 to support the UK’s journey to Net Zero. In its simplest form, the CfD is a contractual mechanism designed to incentivise investments in renewable energy projects in the UK at the least cost to the consumer.
What is a Contract for Difference and why do we need it?
CfD is a long-term contract between an electricity generator and Low Carbon Contracts Company (LCCC). The contract enables the generator to stabilise its revenues at a pre-agreed level (the Strike Price) for the duration of the contract. Under the CfD, payments can flow from LCCC to the generator, and vice versa.
