As an integral part of the Environmental Studies Program (ESP) since 1996, BOEM has utilized the potential to match USGS capabilities and interests with the biological study needs of BOEM's mission.

The National Archive of Marine Seismic Surveys (NAMSS) is a collaborative effort of BOEM and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) that provides a public interface for the release of seismic data on the OCS.

BOEM is the steward of minerals on the United States Outer Continental Shelf (OCS), including critical minerals. BOEM is developing a National Offshore Critical Mineral Inventory (NOCMI) initiative, which strives to locate, identify, and understand potential critical minerals on the OCS.

The overarching goal of the Gulf of Mexico Marine Assessment Project for Protected Species: sea turtles (GOMMAPPS) study was to collect broad-scale information on the distribution and abundance of sea turtles in the Gulf to inform seasonally- and spatially-explicit density estimates for priority species.

These map layers display the density of birds (birds/sq km) detected in the Pacific Continental Shelf Environmental Assessment (PaCSEA) 2011 – 2012. PaCSEA involved repeated low-elevation aerial surveys along 32 broad-scale transects to quantify seabirds and marine mammals from shore to the 2000-m isobath.
