2009年2月12日 · Welcome to the homepage of the USS Cusk (SS/SSG-348). In her 24 & 1/2 years of service, the Cusk served in three wars, made submarine and US Navy history many times, and never failed to complete a single mission.

She was designated SSG-348, 20 January 1948 and was the first submarine to launch a guided missile (a Republic-Ford JB-2 Loon, derived from the German V-1 flying bomb) from her own deck, a forerunner of the cruise missile and ballistic missile submarines of the future.

The third USS Farragut (DD-348) was named for Admiral David Glasgow Farragut (1801–1870). She was the lead ship of her class of destroyers in the United States Navy.

2009年2月12日 · On January 20, 1948, the Cusk was redesignated SSG-348, the second of four designations she would receive throughout her career. The Loon missile was a copy of the German V1 "Buzz Bomb" that was later redesignated by the Navy as the LTV-N-2 missile.

2009年2月12日 · In 1948, the Cusk was redesignated from SS-348 to SSG-348 to reflect her new missile launching capability. She continued launching missiles and testing her missile guidance systems, and was joined in the fleet by two other missile submarines, the USS Tunny (SSG-282 ) and the USS Carbonero (SSG-337).

USS Cusk (SS/SSG/AGSS-348), a Balao -class submarine, was a ship of the United States Navy named for the cusk, a large food fish related to the cod. Cusk was launched 28 July 1945 by Electric Boat, Groton, Conn.; cosponsored by Mrs. C. S. Gillette, and Mrs. W. G. Reed; and commissioned 5 February 1946, Commander Paul E. Summers in command.

The I-400s were 400 feet long, and the Ethan Allen was 410 feet long. The George Washington-class boats were all 381 feet long.
