The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a corporate climate action organization that enables companies and financial institutions worldwide to play their part in combating the climate crisis.

The SBTi mobilizes the private sector to take the lead on urgent climate action. The SBTi enables companies and financial institutions to understand how much, and how quickly, they must decarbonize to prevent the worst impacts of climate change.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) provides companies with a clearly defined pathway to future-proof growth by specifying how much and how quickly they need to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

To be in line with SBTi Criteria, companies must set scope 3 targets. These are supplier engagement targets and/or reduction targets that collectively cover at least 67% of total scope 3 emissions - if these emissions represent over 40% of their total scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.

SBTi develops standards, tools and guidance which allow companies to set GHG emissions reduction targets in line with what is needed to limit global warming and reach net-zero by 2050 at the latest.
