Union Pacific 428 is the current major restoration project in the Illinois Railway Museum’s Steam Shop. It is a 2-8-0 “Consolidation” mixed-traffic locomotive built in 1900 by Burnham, Williams & Company, a predecessor of Baldwin. It was originally numbered UP 1648.

Union Pacific 428 is a mixed-traffic freight and passenger engine and was the last Union Pacific steam engine to operate in passenger service. When it was built, it was designed as a heavy freight engine, but in later years it also saw use in passenger and mixed-train (mixed freight and passenger) service on UP branch lines in Nebraska.

2022年5月19日 · The current focus (as of 2022) of the Illinois Railway Museum's Restoration Shop is Union Pacific Consolidation #428. This 2-8-0 was built in 1900 by Burnham, Williams & Company, which eventually became part of the Baldwin Locomotive Works.

Union Pacific 2-8-0 #428 got some time out in the sun today, and after many years, was re-united with her cab! A ton of work went into this moment, including an overnight work session by our volunteers recently. Many thanks to them, and to all that have worked on 428 over the years!

In October 1958, 40 years ago this fall, Union Pacific 428 became the last steam locomotive to pull a regularly scheduled passenger accommodation on the UP. It stood in for diesels on the Grand Island-Ord mixed train during the fall grain rush that saw the last runs of the 800-class Northerns, the Challengers, and the legendary Big Boys.
