One of the most original and effective military developments in World War II was the proximity, or 'VT', fuze. It found use in both the Army and the Navy, and was employed in the defense of London.

Three critical secret projects were pivotal for the Allied victory in WW2. Two of these were the development of the atomic bomb and radar. The third was the development of the proximity or VT (Variable Time) fuze.

Just off Guadalcanal, the USS Helena (CL-50), which had been equipped with 500 rounds of the 5-inch VT projectiles in October 1942, came under attack by two Aichi D3A "Val" dive bombers. Within a minute and a half, both planes had been shot down. The antiaircraft control officer on board the Helena was convinced the shells had done their job.

After World War II, naval aviation saw great reductions in numbers, while new technologies fostered new types of aircraft squadrons leading to new designations for roles such as nuclear attack, airborne early warning, and "all-weather" (radar-equipped) squadrons. Others were developed specifically for roles necessitated by the Vietnam War.

Just over twenty-two million VT fuzes were produced during World War II by more than 100 manufacturers. Seen as the most important anti-aircraft development of the war, Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal said, "The proximity fuze has helped blaze the trail to Japan.

Suffering at least seven torpedo hits, five from Walt’s squadron alone, as well as several bomb hits from diving SBD Dauntless dive-bombers, Shoho sank while still in view of the retreating Americans. Walt and the VT-2 squadron had much to celebrate after returning to Lexington intact. The success on May 7 only magnified May 8’s failures.
