The VF-1R Valkyrie was an upgraded version of the VF-1 Valkyries designed to extend its service life as part of the VF-1R Veritech Retrofit in 2014. It added armor and a new head laser weapons systems.

The VF-1R would replace the older GU-11 series of gun pods with the newer EP-5 particle gun. This newer gun is powered directly by the protoculture generator and can fire single shots of 20 MJ. The two head lasers were similarly upgraded to LA-3 lasers.

The YF-1R is similar to the standard -A model, but mounts two top mounted lasers between a single autocannon.
