First, the VIRL PE is a virtual machine (typical deployment) and inside the VIRL PE there is a hypervisor. Second, the Cisco nodes are virtual machines; and in turn, run inside the VIRL PE. This is called nested virtualization .

Using VIRL PE requires any one of the following supported virtualization platforms. Visit the VMware product and VMware support pages for guidance on how to obtain, install, and use VMware products. VIRL PE is not supported on VirtualBox® or Parallels®.
