Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is the distinguishing feature of universities of technology and has been practiced by the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) since its inception. WIL is a prerequisite and essential for standardised quality assessment and implementation of WIL across the university sector.

Co-operative Education is the umbrella term that is used to summarise all activities such as placement of WIL students, Internship, etc. Work Integrated Learning as a pedagogy of learning consist of different modalities. In VUT, Workplace Based Learning is used as a compulsory modality in most disciplines offered.

The learning guide serves as a guideline for WIL for the duration of 12 months. Learning material required will vary based on the industry of placement. The materials gathered during studies at the University as well as any material that may be supplied/required by the respective employer/training institution will be of benefit to the learner.
