The W140 was designed by Mercedes-Benz’ chief designer - Bruno Sacco; although he always considered the W140 to be “four inches too tall.” There were four body variants of the S-Class: short wheelbase (W140), long wheelbase (V140), coupe (C140), and Pullman (VV140).

The third generation of Mercedes-Benz S-Class is known as the W140. Introduced for the 1992 model year, the W140 was offered as an S-Class Sedan, or as the S-Class Coupe (C140). Built until 1999, the W140 was replaced by the W220 S-Class for the 2000 model year.
