On July 24, 1974, the WFL's fiercest rivalry came into being, the Birmingham Americans and the Memphis Southmen. The "City by the River" (Memphis) came to "Football Heaven", as it was tabbed by the local media. Memphis coach John McVay brought a balanced offense and a hard hitting defense led by ex-Heisman Trophy winner quarterback John Huarte.
