Willem Luyten joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota in 1931, his appointment at Harvard having been terminated the previous autumn, apparently without cause. Willem Luyten’s interest in astronomy dates from the 1910 appearance of Halley’s comet over his home in Semarang. He made his first astronomical observations on Java in 1912, and continued them while a student at the University of Amsterdam, where he received a B.A. degree in 1918.
