Tucked away inside the heavily fortified R677 casemate at the western end of Omaha Beach is one the most feared weapons of WW2 - the infamous 88mm Pak 43/41 gun. Overlooking the beach to the East, this powerful cannon wreaked havoc on those landing on this sector of the beach on D-Day.

Wn72 Vierville-sur-Mer le Casino. Wn72 part of the group StP Vierville covering Vierville-sur-Mer and the D1 draw or valley running inland and the easiest way off the beach. The Germans defended this beach with its three Wn's, an 8.8cm Pak 43/41. One of the most powerful guns at the time and many many machine guns.

These three German Widerstandsneste are situated in the Dog Green sector which saw some of the heaviest fighting in the morning of june 6, 1944. WN72 was the most formidable of the three; a H-667 type casemates (nowadays with the National Guard monument on top of it) housed a formidable 88 mm. PAK43 gun (It’s still there) and dominated the beach .

Omaha beach was unlike any of the other assault beaches in Normandy. Its crescent curve and unusual assortment of bluffs, cliffs and draws were immediately recognizable from the sea. It was the most defensible beach chosen for D-Day; in fact, many planners did not believe it a likely place for a major landing.

Nr. 677 bunker of resistance nest WN72 armed with an 88mm PaK 43/41 that knocked out numerous tanks of the 743rd Tank Battalion during the morning, along with a number of landing craft. As can be seen in the images, the gun could reach virtually all of the beach.

2002年10月6日 · According to D-Day Then & Know WN73 was right next to WN72, on the extreme right flanl of Omaha beach, opposite the Charlie sector of the beach, to assaulated by C Company 2 Ranger. WN72 covered D1 exit from Omaha whilst WN73 covered WN72's left flank.

The Wn 72 strongpoint is one of the four defensive points of the village of Vierville-sur-Mer. It is located at the northern entrance of the Vierville-sur-Mer valley and consists of a casemate type H677, a casemate with double embrasure for anti-tank guns and another casemate type SK for machine guns, as well as several shelters and tobrouks.

2017年7月28日 · The WN 72 was positioned half way between the beach and WN 73 and WN 71, closing the access to Vierville through D-1. It was built on top of Hotel Legallois from which the white columns and small roof can still be seen, helping to the camouflage of the position.
