Go to Review > Language > Set Proofing Language. Check the Detect Language Automatically box. Change the language for selected text. When you write sentences that contain words in different languages, the Detect Language Automatically function may not recognize a language other than the default.

If the spelling checker isn't checking words that you typed in a different language, or if it marks words in a different language that are spelled correctly as misspelled, the words might be identified with the wrong language.

On the Review tab, go to Language, and then select Detect language automatically. In Word for the web, click or tap where you're going to add text, or select the text that you want to mark as a different language.

Word marks spelling, grammar, and stylistic issues with an underline. Control-click the word or phrase and choose one of the options. If Word incorrectly underlined a word as misspelled and you want to add that word to your dictionary so that Word will properly recognize it in the future, see Add or edit words in a spell check dictionary.

Words that are spelled the same way in several languages, such as "centre" in English (United Kingdom) and French (France), might cause incorrect language identification. To solve this problem, type more words in the language that you want, or clear the Detect language automatically check box.

If you need to add text that is in a language other than the one you normally use, Office can check spelling and grammar of that text for you.

Select or clear the Check spelling as you type check box. In programs that have automatic grammar checking, you may also select or clear the Mark grammar errors as you type check box.
