The Boeing X-45 unmanned combat air vehicle is a concept demonstrator for a "next generation" of completely autonomous military aircraft, developed by Boeing's Phantom Works. Manufactured by Boeing Integrated Defense Systems, the X-45 was a part of DARPA's J-UCAS project.

Oct 28, 2009 · One of the aircraft systems evaluated was the Boeing X-45A, for which NASA’s Dryden (now Armstrong) Flight Research Center in Edwards, California, provided technical expertise and support facilities. The X-45A was the first of two UCAV demonstration versions to be used in advance of fielding operational systems.

First flown in 2002, the X-45A was the first modern UAV designed specifically for combat strike missions. The stealthy, swept-wing jet has fully retractable landing gear and a composite, fiber-reinforced epoxy skin. Its fuselage houses two internal weapons bays.

In April 2004 an X-45A hit a ground target with an inert, precision-guided weapon. In August 2004 for the first time, one pilot-operator successfully controlled two X-45As in flight. In 2005 the X-45As autonomously flew a pre-planned SEAD mission against simulated Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) systems.
