XETV originally signed on the air on April 29, 1953, as an English-language independent station licensed to Tijuana, serving the San Diego market on VHF channel 6. It has been owned by the Azcárraga family since its inception, but was operated by Bay City Television, a subsidiary of what would later become Televisa .
