It is used to launch Yak-061 "Pchela-1T" UAV for reconnaissance or jamming at ranges up to 60 km. The single-rail launcher is mounted on left hand side of the roof of the hull. It has large three-piece tube on forward right hand side of the roof of the hull.

The Shmel-1 (Yak-061) UAV is just one of several types of UAVs in service in Russian Army today and it has been exported at least to Syria in 1992. Shmel-1 catapult is typically mounted on a BMD platform.

The Shmel (Bumblebee) has been the Russian army's primary close-range reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The Shmel has high mounted straight wings with turned-down tips and ailerons for roll control. A broad-chord ring enshrouds the pusher propeller and the rotable elevator and rudder.
