Yi City (义城, Yì Chéng) is an abandoned city located in the Shudong area. Yi City is surrounded by steep cliffs on all sides that tilt toward the center in an extreme manner, appearing both menacing and constricting, almost as if it would collapse any moment. Son of the Ouyang clan leader; friends with the young Lan disciples. Sentimental and emotional, and comes up with a poetic description of the ghost girl in Yi City. 15 year old son of Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan. Raised jointly by his uncles Jin Guangyao and Jiang Cheng.

However, the Yi City arc and its placement so early in the novel is actually just a huge and very clever spoiler to most of the important plot points of the overarching story… if you know what plot points to look for, which an un-spoiled first-time reader would not.

The Yi City involves Wei Wuxian and a bunch of younger disciples of multiple clans messing about in an empty zombie-filled city, learning about corpse poisoning and how to cure it, how to look at ghosts, a practical use of dark magic, and mundane-people methods of warding against the supernatural threats.
