2004年2月12日 · No, the ZL3 was the code to convert the body to accept the SS option. No more, no less. If that code was not there, the car would come out as a Malibu. Option codes like this contained parts lists and instuctions to plant personel as to how to built that option into the car.

All 396 L34 or L78 SS Chevelles got this code regardless of where it was built at. It is my understanding that the ZL3 code was telling the line worker this was an upgrade from a base Malibu.Thus the RPO Z25 396.

2012年9月15日 · ZL3 shows up on all plants' SS396 cars probably to denote the mods required to the body for SS396 badging and other trim. KC has this as well along with the Z25 option code itself, the only plant that does.

2006年2月18日 · The ZL3 is a code for the assembly line to adapt the car for the SS option, i.e. put the right equipment on the car like disc brakes, 12 bolt axle, punch holes, attach proper fuel & brake line and the like so when it got to the end of the line it was a Z15 SS454 or Z25 SS396. The ZL3 seems to show up on all Chevelles with 350 or 375 HP 396 engines.

2004年12月30日 · I was told years ago by knowledgeable sources this code (ZL3) came about because Chevrolet dropped the SS as a separate model and this code forced the car to be a SS by converting a regular car to SS trim.

2011年3月8日 · It appears to be stamped twice with the same number in two different directions on the frame. The build sheet has a code that says "ZL3 SS 396 Conversion", is this normal for an SS 396 to say "conversion."
