ZIS-5 served also as base for many special trucks like refuellers, field workshops, ambulances, portee guns, and AA platforms. After the GAZ-AA , the ZIS-5 was the 2nd most used Red Army truck of 1933-1943 period.

Adopted in 1939, the 85-mm M1939, like its German counterpart the 88-mm Flak 18/36/37, was meant for air defense. Like many anti-aircraft (AA) guns of the era it was also provided with anti-tank ammunition in the event a tank should appear. 85-mm M1939 guns were organized into heavy anti-aircraft regiments of 16 guns.

The GAZ AA, nicknamed the "Polutorka" was the most common truck in service in the Red army when the war started with about 155,000 for one million produced, used by the civilian services of USSR. It was a licence-production version of the famous Ford AA, and in 1938 was declined into the simplified GAZ MM and 6x6 GAZ AAA.
