Extinction refers to a procedure in which reinforcement of a previously reinforced behavior is withheld. Once we are able to find the function maintaining a behavior, we use extinction to withhold the maintaining reinforcer. Extinction must be implemented for all occurrences of the target behavior to be most effective.
