#OnThisDay in 1883, the inaugural Express d’Orient, a precursor to the legendary Orient Express, departed Gare de l’Est in Paris on its maiden voyage. The luxurious train, a vision of Belgian entrepreneur Georges Nagelmackers, embarked on a journey that would come to define and epitomise a gilded period of rail travel for the wealthiest. While this first trip only ventured as far as Vienna, it marked the beginning of a route that would eventually stretch all the way to Istanbul with connections
