My headcannon is after Ford left Bill went and did a lot of self destructive behaviors with other dudes and substances etc… Didnt make him any better it was just an un healthy habit for awhile while he tried to cope with losing Ford, everytime when he was done he just kept thinking about how much better life would have been with Ford.
