It is very healthy to stimulate root growth on your new plants by loosening up or roughing up the root ball. I like to use a serrated edge on larger plants and at the bottom of the container if you have any circling roots, you want to cut those circling roots right off. I wouldn’t be very rough with a brand new seedling but anytime you take a plant out of a container and put it in the ground check for how many roots you have.
