Medicinal mushrooms have been used as a food and medicine for thousands of years amongst many cultures. Predating ancient egypt, ancient china, far and beyond the realms of Sumeria, and beyond, mushrooms were often associated as the ‘flesh of the gods’, or ‘immortality’ tonics. In ancient Egypt for ex, mushrooms were typically only eaten by pharaohs and other nobles, and were given the name “sons of the gods” and depicted in artwork as being sent to earth on lightning bolts.
