Dusky-footed woodrats are rodents native to California and are sometimes referred to as ecosystem engineers. They create large nests of sticks, barks, leaf litter, and other plant matter, with multiple rooms of different functions. These woodrat nests can house successive generations of woodrats down the matrilineal line.
