How to Dig, Divide, and Store Dahlia Tubers - Fine Gardening

Experience. We know how to store dahlia tubers in our climate plain and simple out of experience. Our soil is clay based and must be washed off our tubers or it increases the percentage that rot away in storage over winter. We move "batches" of approximately 14 bins at a time from temp storage to washing, then in a 42* cooler until they are divided within that week. We do not let the tubers dry completely out. How to Store Dahlia Tubers Dahlias are planted out in May when all risk of frost has passed but can be started off in March if you have a greenhouse, polytunnel or bright porch. Tubers received now are best stored in pots of dry compost and kept indoors in a shed or similar to protect from frost. If starting dahlias early under cover in March, the compost in the pot just needs to be moistened (but not soaked) to trigger growth.
