It’s a rough life out there. It doesn’t matter if it’s a feral cat chasing a ghost crab down the beach or a ghost crab carrying a young hatchling sea turtle away. The hardest thing about being a wildlife photographer is to not interfere and let whatever battle is playing out before your lens unfold on its own. Want a good way to spend an hour in the morning? Try watching black skimmers zipping through the surf looking for sushi. Watching them glide through the shallows is truly magical, and seeing them snatch a fish from the vanishing surf is even more so. This bird managed to grab a small pompano or permit. I can’t tell. Either way, its catch was far too large, so a little catch and release was in order. Still glad I’m not a fish. | Mark Smith Photography
