A female mountain troll proposes to a knight, Herr Mannelig. In return, he offers her gifts, a good life and devotion. If the Herr Mannelig accepts the offer, the troll will turn into a human. However, Herr Mannelig rejects the troll on the grounds that she is not a Christian. The troll, whose love is unrequited, closes in his house and cries.
